Different. Think differently. Don't mindlessly follow. Don't go along just to get along. Challenge the status quo. Don't be afraid to forge a new path. "Far from the madding crowd"...

Flawless. No one is perfect. And perfection wasn't the goal. Rather, it became our north star. A pursuit where strategy and precise execution lived.

Put yourself in a position to have as many “experiences” as you can. There is a massive difference between “job experience” as measured in time versus “experiences” or moments when you’ve got to perform.

I’ve seen many managers with “20 years of experience” that have accomplished relatively nothing. Conversely, I’ve seen leaders with relatively few years in a management role that have been put through the leadership gauntlet - reorganizations, layoffs / reduction in force, launch or start up mode - and they are infinitely better prepared for greater responsbility.

One of the most oft overlooked situations in business. SPF's are typically associated with some type of operations where a breakdown or one person's failure shuts the entire process down.

There's another type that is equally devastating - the sales SPF. How many times, as a sales person, have you put all of your eggs in one basket? Having only one relationship with a potential or current client? And then watching that relationship leave the company, be promoted or be transferred effectively killing months, if not years, of work.

Keep SPF's at your organizations peril. Or eliminate them. Cross train your people. Build in redundancy. Develop additional relationships within your client organizations.

Avoid hiring mediocrity. Milk toast. It will kill you in the long run. Swing for the fences. Fail fast. I'd rather take the proverbial "flier" than hire safe.

Finally, resist the urge to hire in your image. Happens too often. No one wanted another me. And you are not unique.

Politeness should be the 8th deadly sin. It's a culture killer. It's a career killer.

As a leader, we give feedback because we care. Being polite because you are worried about hurt feelings or saying the wrong thing isn't helping your people develop or succeed. If done properly - head and heart aligned - being a little less polite can change someone's career for the better.

Individual Contributor? You aren't off the hook either. In fact, your leaders need you to be a little less polite. They need to hear when you are overloaded, under resourced or just plain wallowing in the trough of despair. They need reality checks - whether they ask for them or not.

This, of course, comes with a caveat: Being a little less polite or providing candor isn't a license to be a jerk.
